Getting hands-on

Come learn how to extend and tweak Drupal to do exactly what you need to do!

We are going to spend three days giving you the tools you need to be a top Drupal developer. We'll talk about how Drupal works under the hood and how to approach writing a Drupal module, providing best practices from our experience. There will be plenty of exercises, examples and always room for questions!

What will we cover?

• A "bird's eye view" of how all the parts of Drupal fit together.
• The structure of a Drupal module.
• What "hooks" are all about and how to use them.
• How to effectively use the database using Drupal's APIs.
• Using built-in features to write secure code.
• FormAPI and how to create and/or alter forms in Drupal.
• Simpletest and unit testing your code.

Additional information:

Each morning will begin with registration and continental breakfast at 9:30am. Classes run from 10am to 5pm.

We will working with Drupal 6, but questions about other Drupal versions are always welcome.

Who should attend?

• Web developers who are familiar with code, but don't have Drupal programming experience.
• Drupal site administrators or are seeking to take Drupal to the "next level" with custom coding.
• Drupal developers looking to improve the depth of their API knowledge.
• Software architects on the fence about whether or not to go with Drupal, who want more in-depth information on how it works internally.

Attendees should have some experience with PHP and MySQL. Previous experience with Drupal is recommended. Seating is limited, so register soon.

What should I bring?

Bring your laptop in order to get the full benefit of the workshop. Lullabot will provide each participant with free wifi and their own hosted Drupal site to work on during class.

You'll also want to bring your list of things that you're trying to do and have questions about. We're here to help!

We'll be spending the week at the excellent Drake Hotel (a Drupal site!) in Toronto's popular Queen West district. The Drake is centered amongst some of Toronto's best restaurants and shopping and is easily accessible via street car from the downtown core.
