Are you one of those rare people that doesn't think Drupal is beautiful "out of the box"? Are you trying to achieve a specific design and having a hard time making Drupal co-operate? Do you just wish you could make Drupal look different? Come meet the Lullabots in Los Angeles and we'll get you up and running with a two day, hands-on introduction to Drupal theming!

We will begin with some introduction to the key concepts in HTML, CSS and PHP that you'll need to take full advantage of the Drupal theming system. Then, we'll dive into Drupal and look at how theming works and have a look at how Drupal "wants to work", how to approach accommodating the interface within our design and how to completely override any output. In addition to hands-on instruction, we will be offering best practices and strategies based on our professional experience. Topics will include:

  • HTML, CSS and PHP concepts for Drupal theming
  • Working with template files
  • The Drupal theme system and how it works
  • Creating a theme from a pure HTML/CSS design
  • Adding custom variables to template files
  • Overriding theme functions

We will cover both Drupal 5 and Drupal 6 theming, specifically noting the changes between the two releases.

Registration and continental breakfast at 9:30 am, classes go from 10 am - 5 pm each day.

Who should attend?

  • Web designers who are familiar with HTML and CSS but are interested in working with dynamic, content management systems such as Drupal.
  • Drupal site administrators who are interesting in learning to tweak the way their site looks and feels
  • Web developers interested in how to change Drupal's interface the right way.

Attendees should ideally have some minimal experience with HTML, CSS and PHP. Previous experience with Drupal is a plus, but not required. Seating is limited, so register soon.

Past Attendees Say:

It's the equivalent of taking an art class from Michelangelo. These guys know their stuff.
Jason Crichton, Interactive Director, Elevate Studios

The Lullabot team has done it again, creating a fantastic learning experience with their API workshop. The team explained some really dense material in a clear and easy to understand fashion. Can't wait to create my own modules.
WayGee Ho - Technical Project Mgr, VH1

The approachability of all the Lullabot staff was awesome. It was very easy talk to any one of the Lullabots, and all of them had a ton of knowledge to share.
Tom Friedhof - Active LAMP

Smart, experienced, and friendly. If you like that sort of thing...
Geoff Butterfield, Director of IT - The George Lucas Educational Foundation

What Should I Bring?

Bring your laptop in order to get the full benefit of the workshop. Lullabot will provide each participant with free wifi and their own hosted Drupal site to work on during class.

You'll also want to bring your list of things that you're trying to do and have questions about. We're here to help!
