Installing Drupal with a Translation

Video by Addison BerryFebruary 22, 2008 - 9:15pm

One of Drupal 6's nice new features allows you to install Drupal using a language other than English. This video will show you how to get a translation, extract it and run the installer with the new language. We will cover the extraction process using three methods (GUI unzip utility, command line and CPanel) because it is important to make sure it extracts properly for the installer to see it.

The video assumes you are already familiar with the basic installation process and only covers the translation part.

Important Note for the geekier people out there - DO NOT USE CVS. A CVS checkout of a translation will not work because the correct structure for the files is created during the tarball packaging process. I learned this the hard way. :-)

- There are other videos that show more of the multi-language features of Drupal 6. The packaging of installation translations has changed a bit since the end of January 2008 so I wanted to cover the new process for just this part.

Darnit

Ugh, it worked fine for me last night. I tested it out before I published it but apparently something wonky happened. Should be fixed up now.

MP4...

Well, for whatever reason, I can't play this file, not even with VLC.

I wish I had a Mac...

February 23, 2008 - 12:12pm Addison Berry

What OS?

I can play it fine with both Totem and VLC on Ubuntu.

Mikkel Høgh (not verified) on February 23, 2008 - 9:10pm

Also Ubuntu

I'm also on Ubuntu 7.10...

February 23, 2008 - 9:20pm Addison Berry

Hmm

Well I know that at some point I also installed a couple codecs for gstreamer (I believe when I first tried to use Totem to open some format it prompted me to go get the codecs I needed.) So I don't know if those are helping VLC work too. Do you have an ffmpeg codec/plugin?

Mikkel Høgh (not verified) on February 24, 2008 - 5:05am

Linux

I have both FFMPEG and all the applicable plugins for GStreamer. I can watch all kinds of other formats - .mov, DivX, etc.

So probably it's just my computer that's hosed somehow. If I was willing to spend a couple of hours messing around, I'd probably be ably to find out why. Linux in a nutshell. :(

Really??

Why add the video in a format that a lot of people can't play?

The Internationalization page on Drupal references this page for how to install translations. Can we get a different version? YouTube embed? Something else?

Please? Thanks.

Yeah, download is broken

And playing Quicktime in the browser doesn't work for me.

Drupal with Yahoo Hosting

Just wanted to know if it is possible to use Drupal with Yahoo hosting services? If yes, what are the pros n cons and requirements for a successful install?

Thanks!!

March 3, 2008 - 12:25pm Addison Berry

Don't know Yahoo Hosting

I am not familiar with Yahoo hosting so I can't say if you can or what pros and cons would be. You need to check to see if it meets the system requirements for Drupal.

Could you please explain me

Could you please explain me the meaning of 'CVS'

May 8, 2008 - 8:08am Addison Berry

Version control

CVS is the version control system that the Drupal project uses to store and track all of the code (for both core and contributions.) You can read more about Drupal's use of CVS in the handbook: http://drupal.org/handbook/cvs.

Does anyone know what 'Finder' add-on she's using on her Mac?

Hello everybody,

I liked the video, but I also liked the 'add-on' for the Mac Os X finder she seems to be using on her computer. Anyone know what kind of plug-in/add-on/tool this is?

Best regards,
Peter

PathFinder

Hi Peter, I use an app called PathFinder (http://www.cocoatech.com/) as a Finder replacement.

Thanks

Thanks for posting this. Would be great if someone were able to put an alternative video up on youtube though - i also had problems with this format.

Anonymous (not verified) on August 21, 2009 - 1:46pm

Really....Mp4?

Why not post it in something that is easy to play. Embed video maybe?

August 21, 2009 - 2:32pm Addison Berry

Video changes

Yeah, we aren't a big fan either. We're currently working on an upgrade for the site and changing how we do video is a big thing on the list (we are migrating away from the legacy of video module). I was actually working on this very task this morning. Definitely moving to embedded.
