Thanks for another

Thanks for another informative show and the introduction to Buzzr.com!

The Buzzr layout / widget tool is fantastic. Do you guys have any plans to release it as a module?

Will Buzzr be updated to Drupal 7 at some point?

Update to 7 and layout tool

Hi hoZt,

We will be updating to 7 -- we just need to make sure the many sites already running on Buzzr will still be supported. So, all the modules we're using needed to be safely ported over. And 7 has to be battle-tested enough so we know it will scale safely. Our best guess is that this will be Q1 of 2011. That's the scoop 'm getting from webchick (Angie Byron.)

The layout/widget tool wouldn't really work too well as a standalone module -- it's really tightly integrated to the rest of Buzzr. So, while a module isn't too likely, I am really interested in doing a distribution one of these days. We bought Buzzr.org at the same time we bought Buzzr.com.

We've applied for a grant that would help make this possible. Why a grant, you say? Because a good distribution requires a community manager and a maintainer.

We would want to involve the community in contributing code, UI, and helping quash bugs. Buzzr code base is huge. So doing Buzzr as a well-maintained distribution with a community at the center, means having a couple of heavy-duty Drupal folks working full time on the project. It's a lot more complicated than just running a commercial product, where we can make all these decisions with a small circle of staff. And we'd have to coordinate the two projects very closely.

And if Buzzr starts making enough money, we'll pay for these extra staff ourselves.

If you have an idea about how to make this happen faster, let me know! I think it's also possible that a large organization might invest enough in a white label version of Buzzr that we'll be able to jump-start a distribution from there. And, of course, there's always VC funding, which we've avoided to date.

Very Interesting

A very snazzy thing indeed, that Buzzr.

That last comment had me wondering what other things already made it to the public forum from Buzzr. Awesome!

If that link doesn't work, do the following google search.

HIgher Ed

The whitelabel version of Buzzr sounds interesting for Higher Ed, but how do you handle the FERPA or single sign on issues for students?

We've run into a few companies who originally had some deficiencies in understanding how things work in Higher Ed...

It would be more interesting if you could license the entire Buzzr environment for schools to implement on their existing infrastructure.

Thanks for Ruining My Day (Sort of)

I've been fairly content with the way I've been building Drupal sites and the methods I've been teaching to some Drupal newbies. This podcast made me stop and rethink a lot of areas.

That messed up my day a little, until I realized how much my current technique is already influenced by Buzzr. For example, most of my recent sites rely heavily on Node Reference URL and Views Attach.

But a lot of what I build still relies on stakeholders and content creators learning some Drupalisms in order to manage their sites.

A few days ago, my wife registered for an account on the website for her sports watch. It offered the option to enter her Twitter credentials, in case she wanted "post to Twitter from Drupal." I wonder how many sports watch owners find that explanation helpful. (Yes, I plan to submit a patch to the Twitter Module about that.)

Earlier this week I watched the demo video for Harvard Scholars' Web Sites and noticed that they never mention the word Drupal to their target audience.

My big takeaway from this is that it's time to stop building great Drupal websites and to start building great websites based on Drupal.

I'm looking forward to experimenting with Buzzr and figuring out ways to further simplify sites for my users.

Thanks, I really did enjoy this podcast, even if it made me think.

just some feedback, because

just some feedback, because this bugs me quite a bit: i've got problems using the new podcast player in chrome/ubuntu. first, time estimates are incorrect (for example 15:24 for this podcast). when connection is slow sound goes off but the player continues "playing". stop/resume doesn't help. also, unfortunately there is no player widget in the teasers any more
