Listen online:
- DrupalVoices186.mp3
Leo Burd is a researcher with the MIT Center for Future Civic Media and Owen Barton works with CivicActions, and they talk about the Voice over Internet Protocol integration module called VoIP Drupal. They talk about how this framework integrates voice and Internet-telephony to Drupal sites in order to build hybrid apps that combine regular touchtone phones, web, SMS, Twitter, IM and other communication tools in a variety of ways. They're holding a webinar on May 12th that you can register for to get more information, or you can check out the VoIP Drupal group on g.d.o. or log on and play with their demo site at VoIPDrupal.org.

Cut Short?
Great interview. Sounds like an interesting module.
I think the interview is cut short. Is there more to it than the 9:28 minutes?
This combination of
This combination of technologies carries social, economic, and progressively positive ramifications. In this particular case, the combination is a simplistic solution to a tough problem. Leo's vision to help technologically underserved areas, with an assist from Owen, is one that I would have never imagined possible due to the counter intuitiveness of it for someone like me who has been blessed with computers his entire life.
For those who have not been as fortunate, simply getting their hands on refurbished cell phones or setting up a land line will hopefully open a door to a whole new world. Moreover, the potential impact on community businesses and organizations will hopefully be a positive one. Through this technology, people can call or text and receive the latest news instantly or at a predetermined set time(i.e. reminder every Wednesday via text about Thursday sale or child's tutoring session, etc)
As Owen pointed out, this is still in the beta phase, so the number of websites that one can prompt via call or sms is not yet known. Drupal Con in October will be a decent indicator for how receptive businesses, designers and programmers are to this idea.
Reuploaded fixed audio
I just re-uploaded a fixed version of this file. It was cut off at the 9:28 point, and you can skip to that last question to hear the rest of it.
