Lullabot is looking for Drupal teachers

Blog by Liza Kindred

Are you a Drupal expert? Are you excited to travel to exotic locations, meet interesting people, and share your knowledge with them?

Lullabot is looking for part-time freelance Drupal teachers. If you've got a flexible schedule and can travel for as much as a week every month or two, this could be a great opportunity.

You should:

  • be a Drupal expert
  • have great communication skills and a sense of humour
  • have teaching experience ('Camps, 'Cons, classes... you name it)
  • be able to commit to doing a certain number of teaching days each quarter
  • be flexible and reliable

We will:

  • train you as a Lullabot teacher
  • provide the training curriculum and equipment
  • pair you with experienced Lullabot teachers (you won't need to go out on your own right away)
  • send you around the world delivering fun Drupal training to smart people
  • work with your schedule
  • pay you for your time and cover your travel expenses

Lullabot has been running public and private Drupal workshops, seminars, and events for the past four years. We've run over one-hundred training events, and trained thousands of Drupal developers internationally. We'd like to share our experience with a few new teachers and expand our training staff.

Interested? Please send the following:

  • A short and friendly cover letter highlighting your relevant experience and achievements
  • A list of your areas of Drupal expertise (API, site building, theming, design, jQuery, systems administration, performance tuning, particular modules, etc)
  • Your resume
  • (A link to) a video (up to 2 minutes) introducing yourself and telling us why you think you'd be a good candidate
  • Whatever else you'd like us to know about you

We’ll be taking applications through January 17th. What your application looks like is up to you, but we're looking for smart-witted, enthusiastic, and friendly people who are excited about teaching Drupal. Also be sure to tell us where you live. Send applications and questions to teachingjobs@lullabot.com.

Are you seeking expertise

Are you seeking expertise with more code-level, custom development projects, or high-level specialization in site building and configuration?

Or more generic and

Or more generic and introductory Drupal topics?

Everything

Everything. We teach Drupal at all levels. We definitely do a lot of "newbie" introductory training and it's certainly been our experience that it's more important to be able to clearly communicate the information that you already know than to know everything there is to know about Drupal.

It might help to take a look at a list of our most common classes:

  • Drupal Intensive is a hands-on introduction to Drupal where we build a complete Drupal site while illustrating Drupal's basic concepts, showing how to choose modules, and configure CCK and Views.
  • Basic Theming is a just what it sounds like.
  • Advanced Theming builds more on the Drupal APIs and really starts to get into the template.php stuff like theme function overrides and adding new template files.
  • Introduction to jQuery is often combined with our theming classes and is a basic introduction to Javascript through the lens of jQuery.
  • Drupal API and Module Building walks students through the process of building a module while discussing Drupal's framework concepts and APIs.
  • Advanced Module Building delves into Drupal's "crazy stuff" like the batch API, content access systems, and the darkest recesses of the form API.
  • Drupal for System Administrators looks at stuff like database and Apache performance tuning and optimization, hardware infrastructure setups, and all the nitty gritty stuff that it takes to run high-performance Drupal sites.

Most of our teachers have areas of expertise, so don't be scared off if you don't feel comfortable with everything above. Heck, I've released more than 20 modules and I'm pretty useless teaching the last two. And we've got a lot of need for people to teach the basics.

That being said, within this curriculum we do a lot of thinking on our feet and will often customize the class as we're teaching based on the needs and interests of the people in the room.

To whom should we address

To whom should we address the cover letter?

Liza and Jeff

Liza and I are taking the lead on this one. So you can address it to "Liza and Jeff". Most people just send it to "Lullabot" and that's fine too.

Why videos?

Several people have asked us if a video is required or not.

The video is not required. However, since our training is not tied to one geographical location and the teachers that we'll be hiring are also going to be from all over, it won't be easy for us to conduct in-person interviews. The video is a way for us to "get to know you".

We've already had several applications come in and I can say that the applications with video make much more of an impression than those without.

CMS management perspective

From my experience the one key Drupal training that's lacking isn't so much the technical, but as a web/community manager to figure out what everything in the CMS 'does'. Indeed the drupal.org site is geared towards developers, and is less useful for this role's needs. I don't see that as a training module listed below, but wanted to flag that up as a possible client need!

Totally Agree about Teaching Drupal from a CMS Management

I'm just getting back into Drupes after being on WordPress for the last three years. I'm looking to use it for a new site and just to get my feet wet again and everything about Drupal is geared towards Developers so I think it'd be great if you offered training from a CMS Management perspective (then I could apply :))

Yes!

Yes! This has certainly been the focus of our latest videos: Site Building With Drupal and Administering Drupal. Our "Drupal Intensive" workshop is focused on non-coders who want a hands-on experience building a Drupal site, but the videos are able to go much more in-depth than we're able to in the workshop.

Are all video format welcome?

Hi,
I would like to send a video too with my resume but probably the easiest way for me to tape me is using my cell phone.
Is 3gp 176x144 video format welcome or do you want me to convert to another format?
Cheers,
Clautio

All good

Yes. That format is fine -- should attach to an email nicely. We're pretty handy with video formats. Ultimately, it's probably easier if you can put it up on YouTube/Vimeo/Blip.tv/Flickr or whatever. But if you want to keep it private, that's understandable. Send what you've got.

Teaching In India!

Are you also looking at India! Would love to teach, doing an introduction to Drupal for the Local FSF groups.

Are U.S. trainers needed?

Are there positions open in the U.S.? Can one live in the U.S. and be available to travel, or are you looking for only non U.S. residents?

Selection process: notifications and schedule

Hi Liza and Jeff, I have a couple of questions about the selection process:

  • Do you send a mail back to applicants acknowledging reception of their applications? It would be important to know, so that we can know if receiving no news from your side means nothing or actually means "your mail has never reached us".
  • How will the selection process evolve from here? I imagine there will be at least a second step (e.g. interviews), but I would be interested in having the complete picture if possible. [This is interesting "per se", but it is above all useful in case one makes it to the second step of the process]
  • Finally: is there any piece of information that you can disclose about how you intend to train your newly acquired teachers? I mean: will it be a residential seminar somewhere in the USA? Will it be a series of local training events in various continents? Will it be a mixture of on-line sessions with some on-job coaching? Will you train just the amount of teachers you are planning to need, or will you train a few more people, just in case? ...all of these questions are just and purely professional curiosity; but given that all applicants have some teaching experience, I am ready to bet we are all interested in knowing more about the training model you are going to follow.

Thank you for your time,
mac.

about email notifications

Hi mac,
I don't know if Liza or Jeff already answered your questions. My experience was that I did not get back any email after my teacher application was sent. And basically I came back today here on this post to write approximately the same (your first) question you wrote.
I would add this: is the selection process already over or are you still reading/watching our emails/videos.
You take care,
Claudio

Good to know I am not the only one!

Thank you Claudio for your input... Good to know that I have not been "forgotten", but we are all in the same situation. :)

I believe part of their silence might have to do with the grammy awards night which happened yesterday, I believe... Let's hope February will bring a fresh stream of news then!

Take care you too,
mac.

Still nothing...

Hi mac,
any news for you?
claudio

Still no news...

Hi Claudio,

still got nothing from their side. I suppose these are those kind of things that change according to culture? I live in Sweden and in Sweden companies reply immediately to notify they receive your candidature, and then they follow-up by telling you whether you made it to the second stage of the selection or not or not (at times this takes up to two months, though).

Here is also "normal" to call your prospective employer to inquiry about the position and the advancement of the selection process, but I know from other colleagues this is not the case in other countries, where such practice is considered bad and will actually shed a negative light on your candidature.

I am too a bit surprised they are not following up this on the blog, but again... maybe this is just 100% normal for a US based company?

Let's agree that the first one to have news will inform the rest of us here, then! :)

Lucky place!

Hey Mac,
I have to say you live in a lucky place. Here in Italy things are totally different. Up to 99% of the cases if you send a resume you don't get any answer... and even if I am a bit frustrated each time I have the n-th "no answer", I am kind of familiar with this. Have no idea which is the behavior about resumes in USA... maybe this is normal or maybe they didn't get any of our resumes, but for sure no lullabot mate is following our comments...
We have a saying here in my country when things appear to be stuck (this has been literally translated in English, hope make sense):
A closed door opens a gate
ciao,
claudio

Are you still accepting

Are you still accepting candidatures?

Answers to Questions

Hello everyone.

1) We are not accepting any more applications at this time.

2) We were astounded by both the quantity and quality of the applications we received. Lullabot is still a small company and we don't have a dedicated human resources person to process and respond to the applications. Liza and I have been going through them and we will be getting back to all applicants this week. Thanks for your patience.

Darn, hope you need another round of new teachers soon :)

Since this pretty much looks like the dream side job... I really hope you need more teachers in the not so distant future.

I'll keep listening.
