Drupal Book Update

Article by Matt WestgateMarch 17, 2007 - 1:22pm

For the last year John VanDyk and myself have been writing the Pro Drupal Development book and it's finally off to the printers! This book covers Drupal 5, and we even managed to throw in chapters on install profiles and Drupal performance and scalability. Over the course of the book I became wildly addicted to OmniGraffle which is a great program for flowcharting. As a result, each of the 23 chapters contains at least one diagram or flowchart (usually more) related to the current topic. Here's a sneak preview of a couple the diagrams. We're so excited to get this out to the world. Soon, very soon now.

Congratulations Matt and

Congratulations Matt and John! I can't wait to read it :). How long will it take to make it to Amazon.com?

Robert Douglass on March 17, 2007 - 4:41pm

This is the Amazon

This is the Amazon link.

I've had the honor of being a technical reviewer for this book and I am very excited that it is now done and will soon be available. I foresee this creating a wave of new, highly trained Drupal developers coming to the project. It is without doubt the best technical writing that has been done on Drupal.

Great job, Matt and John!

Enormous! I can´t wait to have it in my hands ;)!

ebook?

Any chance of an ebook? Not only are they a little cheaper than a hardcopy (and better for the environment), but they're oh-so-much more convenient. Maybe you could sell them at your seminar next week? :)

Just preordered. I'm

Just preordered. I'm excited to get my hands on it and see if it can help me fill in some gaps -- especially excited about jQuery docs.

Any idea if the book will

Any idea if the book will ship from Amazon before April 9th? I've never pre-ordered a book before so I'm not sure what to expect. I really can't wait to get my hands on this book.

Fantastic

This looks like the holy grail for Drupal users.

Any sample

Can't wait to read it. The most awaited drupal book of all times!
Is there any sample chapter for us to get an apetizer?

Congrats!!

Another vote for the ebook version

Hey, congratulations! It's already in my wish list.

I'd also love an ebook version, for some of us ordering a book from Amazon is a little more expensive and takes more time than paying and getting an ebook with a few clicks.

Oh, and yes, we really need more professional Drupal developers, most of us don't even have time to breathe and having extra hands would be great for many of our projects :)

Those flowcharts look good.

Those flowcharts look good. I think this will be more useful than those Ruby-on-Rails books gathering dust on my shelf ;)

Can't wait to get the Amazon package!

I pre-ordered this book exactly 2 months and one day ago and am very excited to *finally* get it :P Looks great, Matt!

@eric: this is what Amazon says: "Delivery estimate: May 3, 2007 - May 22, 2007", so that's another 1.5 months of waiting... mehh

Beta Book or ebook please

Hi,

I want to use Drupal on my next project, but I couldn't really find any good tutorials on Drupal 5 - the handbook for v5 seems to be a WIP as well and it's very hard to find good learning material for v5, so I'm really keen on getting this book asap, since I hope it covers everything I need to get started (overview, themeing, module creation, cck, etc.)

Matt, is there a reason why Apress doesn't offer this book as a BETA book? I can't really wait until the 27th of April - I need to learn things now - and fast ;) I would certainly pay the full price (rather than Amazon's price) for a pre-order and access to the BETA or RC versions.

Thanks

+1 for a Beta book

I'm in complete agreement about a Beta Book. I bought the Agile Web Development with Rails beta book and it's so convenient and fast getting the ebook immediately, and the hard copy later. You guys should definitely look into this.

Gary (not verified) on April 3, 2007 - 6:21pm

Are any of the authors

Are any of the authors actually reading these comments? Would really like to get an answer on the above, i.e. can we preorder now and get access to a BETA/RC book?

Thanks

Updates

The word in the Apress circles is that the book will be available in stores and amazon.com the first week of May. It will also be available as an ebook, but probably not until the same launch date. For more information and updates you can visit the official book site here.

Trust me, I want the book out as soon as you guys do. Not much we can do besides wait for the first run and oud date.

Got an e-mail from Amazon

Got an e-mail from Amazon today. Mine has shipped!

Got the book-great

I got the book on Monday and its great. It assumes the reader already knows how to develop an application - and concentrates on show how to develop various Drupal components. Its helped me understand the "Drupal" way of thinking.

chris (not verified) on April 24, 2007 - 7:27am

*Sob*

And Amazon UK has just sent me a mail saying it won't be sending it this week as the pre-order has been showing all along - but somewhere between 15th May and end of June :(

derrick (not verified) on June 4, 2007 - 10:16pm

Fantastic

Finished reading this book a couple of weeks ago and must say it really helped me over what I'd consider a steep learning curve. This is a great reference with enough detail to tide me over for some time. Now... do you want to blow this out into another book specifically on theme development? ;) THANK YOU.
