[Susan Stewart](https://binaryredneck.net/) (aka [HedgeMage](http://drupal.org/user/13813)) talks about some ways to help get involved with contributing to the Drupal project and participating within the Drupal community. She gives an [overview of the Drupal issue queue,](http://drupal.org/node/317) and a brief description of all of the different issue statuses. She also talks about some of the differences between the [different Drupal IRC channels](http://drupal.org/irc/channels) and some of the cultural standards of the community.

Susan also mentions some important issue queue tags for beginners such as the [Novice tag,](http://drupal.org/project/issues/search/drupal?issue_tags=novice) [Accessibility tag, ](http://drupal.org/project/issues/search/drupal?issue_tags=accessibility) or [D7UX usability tag.](http://drupal.org/project/issues/search/drupal?issue_tags=D7UX%20usability)

Also briefly mentioned is [Angela Byron's Core Development Summit presentation](https://webchick.net/files/drupal_core_summit/patches.html) on an effort for making it easier for beginners to be able to test patches. More details on this infrastructure effort can be found at the [PIFR demo.](http://drupal.org/project/pifr_demo)
