Join us in this two-day interactive workshop as you learn how to make a professional-looking Web 2.0 Drupal theme. We will walk through the design process and discuss the tips and tricks we used to create great-looking Drupal sites for Lullabot.com, Participant Productions, Leo Laporte's This Week in Tech, MTV UK, and Fearless Living. You'll learn first-hand about Drupal's flexible presentation layer and create your own Drupal template. We'll also cover:
  • How to find the parts of Drupal that can be themed
  • Determining which template engine is right for you
  • The PHPTemplate system in detail and walk through advanced examples of what it can do
  • Overriding template files and variables
  • Using Ajax to create dynamic web content
  • What's on the horizon for Drupal 6.0

Who's Teaching?

The Drupal Theming workshop offers practical advice, best practices and hands-on training from Drupal experts who've developed real-world commercial web applications. This workshop will be lead by Lullabot principal Jeff Robbins, along with theming ninjas Nate Haug and James Walker. Our entire Lullabot team will be at your disposal to answer questions from numerous perspectives and to ensure that every student receives one-on-one instruction. A bonus for this workshop is that they are being held on the 29th floor of the beautiful newly rebuilt 7 World Trade Center, in Manhattan's first LEED Gold certified office building. Come prepared for breathtaking 360 degree views of Manhattan! Lullabot has created sites for Ringo Starr, Participant Productions, Leo Laporte at This Week In Tech, television star Rhonda Britten of Starting Over, the BBC and many others. Lullabot's contributions to the Drupal project include: the URL aliasing module, the ecommerce package, sIFR, TinyMCE, and countless bug fixes and features, plus extensive documentation.

Who Should Attend?

  • Web Designers
  • Web developers
  • Drupal developers looking to improve their theming ability
Attendees should be comfortable with (X)HTML and CSS techniques. Previous experience with Drupal is a plus, but not required. Attendance is limited, so register early.

Past Attendees Say:

The Lullabot Drupal Theming Workshop is a must! My main concern with using Drupal had been 'can I make it look like I want it to'? This workshop showed me how to do that. As a result, I have decided to go 100% Drupal with my web development business. -- Rick Hood, Flow Media Design
As everyone who's tried to customize drupal knows, there's a really steep suck curve. Lullabot helps you learn all those crazy mad ninja kung fu skills so you can become a drupal superstar. -- Gwen Park, Director of Technology, OurChart
The Lullabot Theming Ninjas walked us through the tools we need to truly take control of the look and feel of a drupal site. Now it's time to go home and break out of the mold! -- John Jones, ESSDACK.org

What Should I Bring?

Bring your laptop in order to get the full benefit of the workshop. You may also want access to a "sandbox" installation of Drupal that you can play with, or simply access to a web hosting environment compatible with Drupal. You'll also want to bring a design to work on. We encourage bringing XHTML/CSS standards-compliant files to work from, but anything could work. If you don't have a project that you are currently working on, you can find a good library of open source templates to "Drupalize" at oswd.org or andreaviklund.com. Registration and continental breakfast at 9:30 am, classes go from 10 am - 5 pm. If you need help making a decision about attending, have further questions about the class, or wish to pay by means other than paypal, please contact us. We'll see you there!
