Ooyala module

Synchronizing and batch importing of videos
FAIL (the browser should render some flash content, not this).

When faced with building Drupalize.me and the Videola Drupal build, we needed to find a partner to help us transcode that video and also deliver it in a number of different formats so that it would work on the myriad platforms that people consume video on these days. Ooyala is a video platform service that handles all the behind-the-scenes heavy lifting, so that video is delivered seamlessly, whether you're using an IPad, or Ubuntu. Ooyala has a wicked API that allowed us to do some really cool things with the Drupal Ooyala module! If your company uses Ooyala, than you have a Backlot account to manage those videos. In this short tutorial we demonstrate how to create Drupal nodes from videos in Backlot with the Ooyala module, and how to synchronize between Backlot labels and Drupal taxonomy.

Media Mover?

It sounds like the Ooyala service plus the Ooyala module offer a similar set of features to the Media Mover module and suite of related modules, but as a service instead of self-hosted.

How do they compare? Other than the obvious "pay for it and give up some control" vs "configure it yourself but retain all tweakability"; what are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

I've actually never used

I've actually never used Media Mover myself, so I really have no experience to go on there. I don't really have an answer for you Bevan.
