Clean URLs

Very nice tutorial. You could have expanded it a bit by explaining clean urls.

Menu System

Thanks for the podcasts.

I followed the ideas in the pod(vid?)cast to change a block of links into Drupal menu entries. I seem to be having some strange issues where some links which include punctuation are not processed correctly.

I am using 4.7b3 on http://www.clyne.org

Where is the best place to comment on this and hopefully to get it fixed?

Video streaming

Great to see some video casts too, however getting hold of Quicktime plugin has become a pain now that Apple force you to download their iTunes software too, and have it installed, when I don't want or need it.

Have you guys considered using Google Video or YouTube to host your videocasts?, and then embed them in to the web page and save yourself some bandwidth bills :)

QuickTime vs...

Because we're showing detailed screen information, we need the quality that we're getting from QuickTime. Google is particularly bad in this way. YouTube has better quality, but they use Flash - another plug-in to install - and their videos aren't downloadable.

So they've all got their ups and downs. In the end, the tools that we are using make outputting QuickTime easy. We have plenty of bandwidth, so that is not a problem. But we will continue to investigate recommendations, suggestions, and complaints. Because, let's face it, we're not putting these videos up for ourselves. We're putting them up for you!

Are others happy/unhappy with QuickTime?

Yes.

I would prefer to not use quicktime...
Google is much better in my opinion.

Thanks!

quicktime or not

Jeff,
You guys are doing a great job and I agree with your comment regarding needing the quality of Quicktime video to show the detailed screen information. Investigating using other means of delivery would be helpful for those who really don't want to use Quicktime, but in the end, you guys are doing this on your own time and your own dime... so you choose what you want to do.
Keep up the good work.

Dan

Though I’m able to view

Though I'm able to view the MOV videos, I think it would make more sense for a large audience to provide these videos in a more standard MPEG or AVI format. Granted they may or may not give the same quality/compression as MOV, they're more standard across all operating systems. But as mentioned earlier, it's your own time and at your own expense, so I'm still grateful no matter what format you release in (as long as it's not WMV :] ).

Quicktime does not run on Linux

I was not able to view your video because QT doesn't run on Linux. I know I'm in the minority, but you asked. :-)

Quicktime

I have a number of computers right now I have the ole faithful laptop which I am travelling with. quicktime seems to only support xp and vista you are loosing older operating systems since its near impossible to find the older plug ins on the apple site only 7 ( I just was there and could not find the download). The site doesnt have quicktime for my windows 2000 laptop I guess I will have to try to return to these articles when I return home to my Vista machine. Since you have all the bandwidth go get the free version of camtasia use it they are giving away 3.0. Since you live in the YouTube world almost anyone watching video has flash.

QuickTime without iTunes

Although Apple hides this link well (they really really want everyone to use iTunes), it's still available:

Quicktime Standalone:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html

alternate QT codec

I haven't had QT installed for a while due to the crap that comes with it.. but dug this up as a alternate MOV codec:

http://www.free-codecs.com/QuickTime_Alternative_download.htm

and it seems to work great.

great podcast/site/concept.. btw...

video format

I have problems to view the video on linux. I can download and try viewing with mplayer, sound is ok, but a matching videocodec couldn't be found on my work station (suse9.0) and apple seems to provide only players for win and mac.

A flashvideo would be better (for me) because there is an official macromedia standalone flashplayer for linux (up to flash 6,0,79,0) and the flashplugin (up to version 7) for opera, konqueror and mozillabased browsers..

only installing quicktime

if you are a windows user you can use an unzipping software like winrar or winzip to extract the installer to a folder, and inside that folder will be to install files, itunes and quicktime. just run the quicktime installer.

Great site!

Great site, great postcasts and videocasts! We at womeontheweb.nl are converting to drupal, your casts are helping us a lot.
I wonder how you make your videocasts. We probably can use them to educate our people (not about drupal, but about basic HTML etc.)

A motivating Vidcast for drupal newbs

nice vidcast.
g8t information
* unzip tar.gz files on windows with "7-zip" link: (http://www.7-zip.org/)
* trying to create a tutorial or presentation on how-to then check this app "wink" link: (http://www.debugmode.com/wink/)

i dunno what app Jeff used to produce this vidcast but i find the above interesting cuz they'r Free.

iPod video

I finally got myself an iPod, and iPod video, which means i installed iTunes (and Quicktime) in the end!

However I was a little dissapointed that I couldn't watch the videocast on my shiny new iPod video -- invalid format?

I don't know why, other videocasts are fine like Diggnation. Any ideas?

Just listened to an old

Just listened to an old podcast #4 where the ipod video compatibility is mentioned. All is clear now. :)

Great vidcast -- extremely

Great vidcast -- extremely helpful. I was having a lot a problems with menus and now it is clear!!!

video format

I took my video playing problem as motivation to update my mplayer/codecs and now my movie plays fine in mplayer on my linux workstation. :-) thanks for the tutorial.

Thanks for writing about mplayer

Thank you drupinchen for writing a quick note about mplayer. I initially upgraded the codecs which did not work. After upgrading mplayer (to 1.0pre7try2-3.3.4 on Slackware) along with installing the essential codecs I was able to watch the video. If I hadn't seen your note I might not have tried. Thanks!

Great! and list of suggested topics.

Hi Matt,

It is great. I fell in love with drupal because of your site.

It would be great if the following topics will be covered in the video/pod cast.

. backup/restore of database
. 4.6 to 4.7 migration
. multisite configuration
. intro to modules about taxomony (a showcase maybe)
. building new phpTemplate theme

Keep it up. Lullabot rocks.

hmm.. problem with url site as google.com

Hi,

I want to add link to website (example : www.google.fr) in Drupal 4.7 "Primary Link", but it's not possible, do you have solution ?

Thanks you

Good job

Hello,

I dont't see the video, but I appreciate your job.

Regarding the .mov format,I don't want to download the Quicktime plug, mostly because Apple promote closed format with his iPod and iTunes site. And Drupal is about Open Source.

So saddly, I will never see your video... but in conclusion this is a good initiative.

Very Nice!

Thank you for producing this nice tutorial on the menu system. As a Drupal newbie, this sort of material is invaluable. Thanks again!

Good stuff

yeah this was very informative. i'm struggling with my first steps in drupal and depend on this sort of thing to help learn(audio+visual=the best).

I really want to know more about how to make a template look nice, as well would be interested in backup/test site workflow.

Not Quicktime please

I too am against using Apple and Quicktime. Could you not release your vodcasts in a more generic format that can be played by many more players?

Congrats

I just have to congrat you pal! As said by another fellow, your material is pure gold! Thanks in name of all newbies!

Quicktime alternative

Don't forget that you can use QUICKTIME ALTERNATIVE!

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/QuickTime_Alternative.htm

Cheers.

can't see your video.

Hi and thanks for all your good work and efforts. for some reason (although i've even downloaded itunes) i can't see it.
what about using flash or free hosting of material at GUBA.com?

Hello, Could anyone tell me

Hello,
Could anyone tell me how can I display the content of, say, Taste & Production, inside the content of Honey as well?

Regards,
David

Can't see video in August

I see Eileen couldn't see the video in June. I still can't see it in August. I can hear the video, but the video is just white.

After it didn't work inline above, I tried downloading it. I've tried using Quicktime and the Quicktime alternative suggested above (thanks!). I'm trying the Quicktime stand alone mentioned above, and will post back if that works, otherwise assume it didn't either.

Old Quicktime

Sounds like you have an old version of QuickTime that doesn't support this video codec. Be sure that you are using a recent version.

Thank you

I was looking for a CMS to be used in my site (by now semi static) and without your menu tutorial it would be hard to build up the menus!

Breadcrumbs

Hey! Thanks for the screencast--I thought it was great. Even though it was pretty basic, I picked up some useful tips.

Something I'm wondering about--why can't you create breadcrumb hierarchy without creating a menu element? For example, on one of my sites I use the views module to make a table of biography pages. When you click on a link, you go to an individual biography page. The breadcrumb is only "Home", but I want it to be "Home >> Biography Index", for example.

Thanks again.

multiple content under one menu item ?

Very good tutorial. It didn't explain how can one add multiple story content items under one menu item. For lots of story items, can't expect to have one menu item per... that would be a LOT of links...

Menu Admin Listing?

Nice tutorial :)

Is there any way to have the admin -> menu page, or a custom page, list only the primary and secondary links for editing (in other words, not list the "navigation" links)? I'm trying to set this up for a client so they can edit their primary links without getting all confused by the long list of "navigation" (admininstrative) links that come first.

Cheers,
Alex

creating a block menu dynamically

I thought there was a menu module that would dynamically create the menu items within a hierarchial view of items as they are added to a vocabulary item. I can't seem to find it on Drupal.

Is there a way to dynamically display terms within a vocabulary in a block but not have to do anything manually except create the terms (categories)? A PHP snippet perhaps? We're using 4.7

Thanks for any help!

2 pointers

Hello,
Thank you for the service you are providing. Excellent stuff. I am presently trying to download everything so that I can watch it at home, away from work. Can you give a link page where I can get all links for podcasts separately from videos please, and all other types too.

Also, can you use the mpeg format to show your videos instead of quicktime?

Be seeing you, :0
