Aaron Winborn of Advomatic and author of the Drupal Multimedia book talks about the new Media module and how it will treat external media embeds as a part of Drupal's file system. He also talks about the API, and the stream wrappers that are being developed that will allow you to have both private and public files exist on the same Drupal site.

Impressive
I am a coder by background, and adopted Drupal so that I didn't have to code every site. I was very concerned about getting tied into a framework that didn't allow for flexibility. The Upload module was limited and a hold over from the old days. I was thrilled to see the unified pursuit of the FileField and associated modules in Drupal 6 -- and now this! Better UI and better API -- NICE!
