Drupal Voices 117: Earl Miles on Views 3, Panels and CTools
- DrupalVoices117.mp3
Earl Miles (aka merlinofchaos) talks about some of the new features in the upcoming release of Views 3, the Drupal 7 port of Views, Panels and the Chaos tool suite (i.e. ctools).
Miles also talks about his recent move from Sony to becoming the Research & Development Director within IO1. They created the IO1 Labs division in order to allow Miles to continue to innovate on so many important projects within the Drupal community. One of the projects that he's been working on is a Panels-based Drupal distro for site builders, and more details on that will be coming sometime in the future.
In addition to helping develop some of the biggest and most important Drupal modules, Miles talks about some of the functionality that has been transferred from some of his contributed modules into Drupal 7. And you can be sure that he'll continue to take a lot of the lessons learned from panels and context, and help improve these areas in Drupal 8 as he was participating in a lot of the Butler architecture discussions during DrupalCon.

Earl - keep up with the good work. You are empowering people beyond what can be imagined...
Features & Exportables is more promising than install profiles
I have recently been interested in the "Features" feature as a way to quickly package semi-custom CMS distros of Drupal. The "Installation Profiles" feature that was introduced in Drupal 6 was an improvement from Drupal-5, but I did not use it much mainly because it cannot be used after the initial installation of Drupal.
Features on the other hand allows us to package specific functionality and pull it into an existing setup. I can bet that this will become just as indispensable as VIEWS/CCK have become when think back to what life was like in Drupal 4.5 just before flexinode was introduced
