A Drupal "feature" is often a lot more than just turning on a module. It often involves enabling multiple modules and configuring all of the proper settings. Unfortunately, there's not a really good way to automate this to make it easier to set up the same configuration on multiple sites or to share these feature configurations with others. This is where the Patterns module comes in.
