Command Line Basics: Moving around

Video by Addison BerryAugust 31, 2009 - 5:10am

This is the first video in a series that shows basic command line usage for *nix systems, such as Linux, Mac OS X, and on Windows, using applications like Cygwin. This video shows the following commands and spends the most time explaining how to move around your file structure from the command line:

  • pwd
  • ls (and ls -al)
  • less
  • cd
  • man
  • clear

Very useful!

This will let many more non-technologists use Drupal -- I'm sort of amazed that nobody's done it before. Brava!

Very Helpful

I have safely been staying in front of a GUI for years but recently decided to dig into the gritty world of the command line. Thanks Addi for taking the time to put this together.

OMG, I'm in love

Thank you so much for this. As a designer who now develops most of the sites I do in Drupal (without the budget to keep a dev team at my fingertips 24-7), I unfortunately find myself desperately needing to know command line, CVS/SVN, and other server admin skills in unexpected moments, usually with a crisis at hand.

When I spend time mastering new technology, I focus on CSS3, HTML5, new video CODECs and the like. Somehow learning UNIX and PHP never rises to the top as The Most Important. Until the next server / 500 error / WSOD crisis.

This is a perfect way for us non-dev-head-types to learn what we need to know to get around Drupal better.

Thanks!

MAMP

I actually do have a video on using MAMP on Mac. I prefer that to monkeying with building up a full stack.

Great Intro to the Comman Line

Addison,
Thanks for this great tutorial. I have always been apprehensive of using the command line. You video makes it less intimidating.

what about rm and mv (remove, and move) ???

September 7, 2009 - 7:16am Addison Berry

coming soon

This will be a whole series of videos. rm and mv are both slated to be in the next video, along with mkdir and cp. It will also do chmod and chown if they fit timewise.

Great series

Addy

Great series of videos. I run an annual "mini course" on Unix as part of a module on Internet Technology here at Swansea University (in which we also install Drupal) and I'll be pointing my students at these screencasts!

home directory

Hi Addi, your video's have allowed me to play around a bit, but I'm a bit confused (ha!) in the installation video you installed to c, in this video your home is user/addi which is much more useful then /home/name. How do you get your home to be where your actual files are?
Thanks!

Thanks...

Thanks for this, as someone who has used DOS extensively before Windows 95 and someone who has a very simple understanding of Unix this helped alot and I've recently started using SSH over FTP for its speed and flexibility so this has helped immensely thanks!
