We're Writing the O'Reilly Drupal Book!!!

It's official! We just inked the deal and we're cranking up our word processors. O'Reilly's first Drupal book will be Practical Drupal and it will be authored by team Lullabot. From our experience training aspiring Drupal developers, we know that one of the most difficult parts of building a Drupal site is figuring out which modules to choose and how to fit them all together. Practical Drupal will be a project-based, guided tour of the best contributed modules, along with instructions about how to combine them to make useful websites. The topics covered will be appropriate for everyone from the complete newbie who knows nothing about Drupal (we'll have a chapter to get you up to speed), to the site builder who's done a couple Drupal sites and wants to know how to take their skills to the next level, to the uber-hacker who wants to know a couple of advanced tricks. This how-to/recipe-style book will focus on several common types of Drupal sites and offer step-by-step instructions on how to build them from scratch.

We're really excited to get started on the book, however, as Matt and Robert know fully well, book writing takes a lot longer than anyone would like. Expect the book to be oriented toward Drupal 6 and released next year. We'll keep you posted on our progress!

Cool!

This is another great addition to the Drupal library. It is great that this book will appeal to newbies and intermediate users.

Excellent. While I haven't

Excellent.

While I haven't found Drupal hard to use, this will be great to show the many people who have been put off by the perceived difficulty of developing Drupal powered websites that they too can use Drupal to their advantage :P

Animal?

OK, we're all waiting on the answer to the most important question... What will the animal on the cover be? :-)

Animal...

Maybe they will make an exception and use Druplicon... :) Or they might even make a new genus for it, especially... :p

Either way, congrats guys and good luck, I'm sure it will work out great!

PS if you want a proof-reader, I'm pretty handy, and would be glad to help out.

zoo hoo

interesting thought! and a most important question!

Looking at the list already in use http://www.oreilly.com/animals.html most of your king of the animal kingdom type are alreasy used : (

I'm personally hope you et something rare and unique and pretty kewl like a Yeti or sasquatch....guess we'll have to wait and see!

Anyway well done lullabot its great news..congrats..This will be a great title to add to anyones library I'm sure. I certainly am excited by the prospect of being able to pick one up some time in the future.

Can't wait for the book. My

Can't wait for the book.

My suggestion for the animal is the Blue -footed Booby

Almost a perfect match with druplicon...

Ah, that's a good one.

Ah, that's a good one. Either that or a dolphin.. Ge, gee, Geek! ;-)

Congrats on the book deal bots!

Congratulations!

That's great news -- for you, O'Reilly, Drupal and all of us lucky readers. Way to go!

That is great for everybody

That is great for everybody - congratulations!

Keep up

WOW! thats great to hear.

The animal is the Korenwulf

We already figured out the animal. The Belgian hamster, aka "Corn Wolf". There is even a brand of beer that uses that....

Woot! Woot!

Woot! Woot! Great news. :)

Congrats

Congratulations on the book. I too am curious about which animal will be on the cover.

Glad to hear that it will be oriented toward Drupal 6. Hope it can make its escape in the early part of the year.

Great news!

Been waiting to see something from O'Reilly, and something from Angie, for a while! Wonderful to see these forces aligning - we'll be expecting great things.

Ditto on the "Great News"

What would be really great is if the book takes some time to create context.

One of my main criticisms of the current Drupal books is that they are happy to walk you through customizing some specific modules, but nowhere is there a feel for "if I am trying to do this, then this is a useful approach." You have to first learn what they write, and =then= figure out if any of it is useful.

And, of course, anything that covers the usual bugaboos about promoting dev code, backing up, updating, multisite setup and maintenance, is welcome (although I think I'm personally starting to figure those out in ways that work for my own sites).

Congrats all you crazy red placid robots

This is great news. ... About time O'Reilly.

Excellent! Great news!

Excellent! Great news!

tres cool

that is one of the best news i read all summer..

congrats lullabotians!

Great News!

Congrats! That's excellent news, couldn't think of a better team for the job!

One Word: Charts

Very cool -- congrats! I've got both the other books in the "Lullabot Libary," and look forward to adding a third. (A couple of the more advanced chapters in Pro Drupal Development still make my head spin, but I find myself absorbing more each time through!...)

And don't forget the pictures! Screenshots, obviously, but especially the flow-charts and other illustration that Matt & John VanDyk used so well. For those of us who don't yet think in code, being able to actually see how the pieces fit together is a huge help.

Also: My condolences for all the nights and weekends you guys are about to lose...

cool

Great news, congratulations to all!

Congratulations

Wow! - Just what is needed for Drupal.

Help out

We can help out on some R&D and proof reading - Go Drupal

Same title as another book?

Isn't there already a book called "Practical Drupal"? It's due out next week:
http://www.amazon.com/Practical-Drupal-Evaluating-Content-Management/dp/...

Seems to me that a different title for the O'Reilly book would be a good idea to avoid confusion.

Looking forward to reading it!

Could publish Chinese version in the same time?

I'm very glad to heard this news. But for people whose mother tongue isn't English, study drupal in English is still a heavy burden.

I suggest O'relly to have someone good at both Chinese and English to start translating with Lullabot. Huge number of Chinese (traditional and simplified users) will get the benefit. Of course, O'relly and Lullabot, too.

Make the book available online early

I'd like to request that the model used for Agile Web Development with Rails be used for this book also - I found it immensely helpful to have my grubby mitts on a PDF version of the book well ahead of print. And it'll probably help to get the book out faster and better as well.
Anyway, good luck with the book - I'm anxiously looking forward to it!

Keep us posted please

Great! Please keep us posted!

Any word on this book? I'd

Any word on this book? I'd like to get started with Drupal as a complete newbie and hopefully a PDF version will be available.

In progress

The book is currently in the process of being written and won't be published until sometime next year. We can't say when in 2008 since it depends on when the book gets finished and how long the editing and and other book publishing thingies-that-they-do takes.

Any update?

Any update on a publishing date for this book? Read Pro Drupal Development last year, looking forward to having another solid Drupal book for getting new employees up to speed with Drupal.

When/where can I buy

When/where can I buy it?
When will this book be published?

P.S. Great work on the Podcast! ;-)

Update on the book status please?

I am about to buy some drupal books and I really would like to get this one. Any news on it? It's been a long time since the this post.

Still writing it

We're still in the process of writing it but heading into the home stretch. Don't look for the book to hit the shelves until sometime later this summer though.
