We know stuff. We empower you to know stuff too.

Spread the Drupal word

Blog by Addison Berry

Lullabot loves to talk Drupal. So much so, that sometimes you can't shut us up. We are regulars at DrupalCons, (you'll definitely see us at DrupalCon Paris), and you'll find us at regional and local Drupal events all over the place from meetups to sprints to camps. In addition to soaking in the Drupal energy though, we also represent Drupal out in the "the rest of the world." Yes, there is more to the web than Drupal.

In addition to being Drupal evangelists, we also love most things open source, webby, or techy. Name a topic in the geek world and chances are there is a 'bot that wants to chat. Going to non-Drupal-specific events not only lets us get our geek on, but it provides rich opportunities for Drupal. Drupal is one player in a larger space and staying in tune with what the rest of the web is doing is important for fresh ideas, growth and collaboration. In addition to being infused with new information and enthusiasm to bring back to the community, the flip-side is being able to expose more people to Drupal. Showing what Drupal is capable of, where it fits in the web ecosphere and addressing concerns helps us draw more people to the community, as well as making Drupal look more viable to businesses that may only play with "names they know." The continuation of any open source project relies on a flow of new contributors and ideas. Getting out of the Drupal echo-chamber is a great way to see things with fresh eyes and make Drupal stronger.

A lot of conferences are looking for people with Drupal knowledge. If you've never presented at a non-Drupal event you should totally check out cool events near you or on topics that interest you, and see where you can get involved. Even if you've never presented before, or are a bit scared to try right now, attending and chatting with people outside the Drupalsphere is a great experience you shouldn't miss. Unconferences (like local barcamps) are a great place to get started by offering to show folks some of your Drupal knowledge (or other tech topics too) in a very informal atmosphere.

This year the 'bots have already been busy spreading the love. Jeff Eaton didn't make it to SXSW but he was part of the team that represented Drupal in the "CMS Showdown" and we co-sponsored the truly rockin' 32bit party. James was invited to the Social Web FooCamp, presented Your blog is your Social Network at WordCamp Toronto, and spoke about "Digital identity with OpenID" at GEN2PHEN Identifying Researchers on the Biomedical Web workshop just a few days ago. Jeff Eaton tore up the CMSExpo with three presentations, covering Drupal development and open source business models.

The year is just getting started though and we have lots more love to spread around. So what's on tap for the rest of the year? Here is a list of non-Drupal events where we'll be (that we know so far). Please add events that you are going to be at this year in the comments and let's all help support each other as we move Drupal closer to world domination.

Reach out to your local PHP,Linux, Web, MySQL group

Addi, great post.

Many people won't get the chance to do as much travel this year. But if you look around you'll probably find a web developers group, a dreamweavers group, a PHP, Linux, or MySQL users group in your area. Contact those groups and ask if there's an upcoming meeting or event you can present at. You don't even have to make your own slides, we can provide you with Introduction to Drupal slides. Contact me through drupal.org if you need slides.
